Blacktops are cool, but don't they have a tendency to break rods? I'm thinking of going silvertop in mine. It's cheaper and only has like 5 fewer horsepowers.

Silvertops are super common. That's about how much they cost in general, and you can even get pre-made wiring harnesses for the swap so you don't have to cut up your old one. They swap up to the same transmission, so you don't have to replace the transmission. It would be a bit harder to swap transmissions because then you need to get the linkage to work with it. There's great support on the swap on the internet. You can pretty much find step-by-step guides with pictures all over the forums. Also, while engine swaps are fun, there might be other things to sort first other than the obvious (looking at the craigslist post you made on the other thread). It's a 30 year old car that's prone to rust and has probably been poorly maintained. Apart from the elephant in the room, I'd be most worried about getting the chassis sorted first. The suspension wear items will need to be replaced, and you should replace the wheel bearings on all four corners because they go bad. If the timing belt really did snap and he just parked it, the car's fine. These are non-interference engines, so it just needs a new belt and the timing set, which isn't a big deal. These engines are fairly unkillable. That being said, I wouldn't pay anything near that price. $1k means you'd feel confident driving the thing home the two hours. The numbers on the windscreen says it's at some sort of business, so if they sell cars and can't fix a simple Toyota engine timing belt, it's probably bunk. If you show interest and say that there's no way you'll pay that unless it's running and you can take it for a test drive, they might try to make it work. You can even offer to pay for the timing belt for them to prove it to you. They aren't expensive. If they get it running, it's probably fine. It'll need some (read: alot) of TLC, but if it runs and drives for a thorough test drive, doesn't drop its oil or overheat, and pulls strongly to the rev limiter, the engine should be good. The only major dealbreaker on a running and driving MR2 is structural rust. Check the strut mounts, where the A pillar meets the door sill, and around the engine mounts. Those are the key points. Surface rust isn't an issue, and is to be expected in spots (you're going to be grinding alot of rust out if you plan on keeping it for a while), as is a rusted out floorboard. Holes in the floor are normal. Don't be afraid to say no. I know that they're getting harder to find, but another one should pop up. They're not rare yet.
